Myrtles Plantation

St. Francisville, LA

sign.jpg (140461 bytes)

The Myrtles Plantation was built in 1796 by General David Bradford, also known as "Whisky Dave".  He had fled from George Washington's Army in order to avoid being arrested as one of the leaders of the Whisky Rebellion.  He arrived at Bayou Sara (now known as St. Francisville), which at the time was under Spanish rule.  This is when he built the plantation now known as The Myrtles.

There are many stories told about The Myrtles today.  Some believe it is one of the most haunted houses in the United States!  Others believe it is all fake.  What do you believe?

This is the view from the front gates of the Myrtles Plantation.  Some guests are greeted by a man in a period costume who orders them to leave.  When the visitors leave, they call the front office to find out when they can enter.  This is when they are told that tour guides do not wear costumes, and no living person works in that position!

These pictures show the front and side of the home.  I love the moss hanging from the flowering tree.  I think it makes the house look spooky!

This is the famous mirror.  The picture on the left was taken at night.  The picture on the right was taken during the day.  Click here if you would like to see what looks like faces inside the mirror on the right.
