What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader is the computerized portion of Renaissance Reading.  When used properly, it helps to accelerated reading growth and foster a love of reading.

How does it work?

Each student is tested on the computer using the STAR Reading test.  The results help determine the ZPD level.  This is the reading range in which each student needs to read to maximize growth.  Each student reads at his own level.

After the student reads a book he goes to the computer and takes a short test on the book.  If the book was read to them, the test is read to them.  If someone reads with them, the test is read with them.  Of course the goal is to have them read independently, but until that is possible the books are read with them before they are tested.  Once they are reading independently, they are allowed to take the test alone.

Depending on the length of the book and how the student does on the test, the student is awarded points.  Points are an indication of how much reading practice the student is getting.  Each student has their own points goal, and a reward is given each nine weeks to the students who meet their goal with at least 85% accuracy.
